Karin Jeffery for Treasurer
Dear Colleagues,
For the last two years, I’ve had the honor and privilege of serving as your CFA Chapter Vice-President. I now ask for your vote once more in the upcoming election – this time for the office of Treasurer.
Why am I running for Treasurer rather than VP this time?
First, the exceptionally skilled Dr. Janet Stemwedel has stepped up to run for VP, and as a fellow philosopher (Philosophy was my undergraduate major) I couldn’t be more thrilled. She will do an outstanding job, just as she does in her other roles of service to our campus as Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Vice Chair of the University Council of Chairs and Directors, and member of CFA-SJSU’s Faculty Rights Committee.
Second, as recent events have demonstrated, we will need a well-managed Treasury to support our members in the days ahead. For example, many of our union siblings at various CSU campuses have had their pay withheld after participating in the January 22 strike. In response, as detailed in our April 8 newsletter, our chapter has joined with other CFA chapters to set up a Strike Fund. This fund will support any SJSU union members who suffer financial hardship from having pay withheld due to their strike participation. And this is just the beginning: As you know, negotiation of the full contract will reopen in 2025, and we must be prepared financially as well as in every other way. The conscientious management of our funds will be even more critical, and you will need – and deserve – transparency on our financial status at every step along the way.
What qualifies me to be your Treasurer? – It’s the same skill set that I use in my teaching. For several years now, I’ve taught the 100W Writing Workshop in PSYC and SISS. This is a challenging course for students and faculty alike; students must learn to focus on both the macro- and micro-levels of research in the social sciences – that is, they must be able to assess the “big picture” of the research on specific issues, while also grasping the apparently infinite details of correct style and formatting in APA or ASA. My job as their instructor is to teach my students both these macro- and micro-level perspectives simultaneously, and to do so with clarity, transparency, and relevance to their academic goals. As your Treasurer, I will apply these exact same standards in performing my fiduciary duties to the chapter and to you. Specifically, I’ll provide you with regular, readily understandable updates on the status of our funds, so that you know exactly where your membership dues are going and how they’re being used to support you, as we forge ahead with our next round of contract negotiations.
For the last two years, as part of CFA-SJSU’s Executive Board team headed up by Ray Buyco and Sabrina Pinnell, I’ve helped steer our chapter through many challenges and transitions. Our team remains committed to serving you, our members, with collaboration and inclusivity, and I remain committed to serving you as part of that team. With your support, I will manage our chapter’s finances effectively and keep you informed. I thank you in advance for your vote.
Thank you,
Karin Jeffery
