Why I am Supporting the Buyco Team
Voting for CFA chapter officers is ongoing and will end April 30. I am supporting Ray Buyco for President and his team comprising Janet Stemwedel for VP; Alicia Henderson for Lecturer Rep; Sabrina Pinnell for Secretary; Karin Jefferey for Treasurer; Chris Cox for CRSJ Chair; Kevin Moore and Andrew Delunas for Delegates-at-Large. I have known Ray for a number of years, first as Chair of Political Action and Legislative Committee and more recently, in the past two years, as our Chapter President. When I became Lecturer Rep in 2019, Ray reached out to me in friendship and in solidarity. As a newly elected CFA leader, there was much that I didn’t know and couldn’t navigate. But Ray was always there with a timely phone call, a piece of friendly advice, and a listening ear. He is thoughtful and deliberative—never one to react hastily. Our chapter has been through many ups and downs and, yet, Ray has remained calm and purposeful through it all, attempting to build consensus, solve problems, and steward the union through its many challenges. He is committed to our core principles of rights, respect and justice. Unlike some, Ray is not a divider but a uniter. He is inclusive in outlook, believing that we all belong within the larger CFA tent.
I am similarly impressed with the other team members—all seven of them. Together, they will ensure that our chapter work is both transparent and efficient. They have a proven record of fighting for our members, whether it is standing up to administrators, organizing labor actions, reaching out to legislators, or working with statewide CFA.
Under their leadership, our union will be in good hands. This is why I am supporting them, and I ask you to do the same.
In union, Sharmin

I’m a retired physicist and my retirement job has been teaching physics part-time at Ohlone College in Fremont. I got involved in the Ohlone faculty union and when I sent out an email asking adjunct faculty for assistance in helping me represent adjunct interests at Ohlone, I only got one response. That was Ray Buyco.
It was a privilege to work with Ray for several years as officers on the Ohlone faculty union. Passionate about economic justice and committed to represent those without a voice in faculty issues, Ray was a force of nature on the union. The result was real progress on adjunct issues with the administration and the Ohlone Board committed to pay parity for Ohlone adjuncts.
I have total confidence that Ray will represent the faculty of San Jose State with the same level of commitment that I witnessed first-hand at Ohlone. Please vote for Ray!

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of knowing Ray Buyco since the 1980’s. I’ve worked along Ray’s side in numerous bands over the years, most of which he led. He’s a highly intelligent, resourceful problem solver with a God given gift for leadership. He understands people and navigates difficult situations with ease and grace. He also keeps his people happy as he’s a fun & colorful character with a beautiful heart. It’s rare to find someone who gets excellent results while maintaining a pleasant and fun work environment. Ray has this gift. You can not possibly find a better candidate for chapter President than Ray Buyco!
Sincerely,

Hello Colleagues,
Although happily retired, I appreciate and enjoy the daily discussion on Faculty Forum.
I don’t recall a more spirited and hard fought campaign for the CFA chapter leadership during my 15+ years on faculty. Those of you who know me well, know that I place an extremely high value on service to one’s colleagues. So, no matter the outcome I thank everyone running for their passion and commitment to the faculty and the union.
That said, I believe the Unity and Action slate headed by Ray Buyco will best serve the needs of the campus and faculty going forward and I wish them well in the election.
